Web Analytics
I recently accepted an offer to lead our Web Analytics team at Orbitz Worldwide. As a Technical Director my main responsibilities would be in the following areas:
1. Work with the team and stake holders to set the processes and expectations
2. Define the Web Analytics strategy and execution plans
3. Build a kickass team
4. Define the roadmap and get stakeholders approval. Then execute it.
5. Have fun and share knowledge.
6. Be a Web Analytics evangelist in the company and outside the company.
I have been working with Google Analytics for a while now. I help build small websites in my spare time and use Google Analytics for those web sites. It is amazing to see how users use those websites and then for us to make decisions based on the data. Making faith based decisions are not good. Why not listen to your customers and make decisions based on that.
Couple years back when I was working with Lucense/SOLR I read “Collective Intelligence” which is an excellent book on how data should be used and also how its being used in companys such as Amazon and Kayak. Last month I read another book “Web Analytics 2.0” by Avinash Kaushik. This is an excellent book for anyone in Analytics world. I would highly recommended following @avinash on twitter. I have bought another book called “Social Media Metrics”. Hope to learn and use the social media metrics around mainly Twitter, Facebook, YouTube.
